VOLKSWAGEN BEETLE
While talking about the history of Volkswagen Beetle, everybody would remember the era of Second World War of Germany where Ferdinand Porsche has developed an idea of a vehicle which is affordable to every average man. It is actually a design which was originally developed by Porsche’s and also Adolf Hitler was a person who has played a major role in development of Beetle.
Actually a meaning of Volkswagen is ‘people’s car’. It is actually a thought of Adolf Hitler that he was supposed to develop a car which should at least carry two adult people and three children. It should also run at the speed of 60 miles per hour. This was the basic concept which actually Porsche was planning to put in the market. Hitler has also set a price which was round about 250$ and during that period it was actually a price of motorcycle. This was looking very low priced car for the make like Porsche but the challenge was accepted and the world has seen the model called Volkswagen Beetle.
This new model of Volkswagen Beetle is styled and designed in California whereas its engineering is done in Germany. They have made this attempt to digress the Beetle from chick car image which it got in the past. Now in today’s latest era it is offered in three different kinds of variants called sedan, speedster and the third one is convertible. The new model of Volkswagen Beetle is a style icon of today. VOLKSWAGEN PHAETON
Volkswagen has finally launched its luxurious sedan, Phaeton, in the Indian market. The full-size luxury sedan was introduced at the 2002 Geneva Motor Show, and has been marketed worldwide since then. The name Phaeton has been derived from Phaeton, the son of Phoebus (or Helios) in Greek mythology.
Volkswagen Phaeton has been launched only in a single 3.6L V6 petrol engine variant with 6 Speed tiptronic gearbox. The sedan has been virtually built virtually by hand at the Transparent Factory in Dresden and features the finest materials, innovative technologies, outstanding design and extraordinary levels of comfort.
The Volkswagen Phaeton has been built on the same platform as that of the Audi A8. The new sedan from VW will be packed with fascinating features like "Climatronic" Auto AC with multi zone temperature control and Cruise control among others. The exterior maintains a very classy attitude.
The Volkswagen Phaeton is available in a multitude of colours including Campanella White, Cairo Grey, Mazeppa Grey, Tarantella Black and Arabesque-Silver. The luxury sedan from Volkswagen will directly compete with Audi A8, Mercedes Benz S-Class and the BMW 7 Series.
Powertrain & Performance
The superior engine ensures that the Phaeton reaches its destination as quickly, efficiently and above all, as comfortably as possible. The 3597 cc, 3.6L V6 petrol engine draws out 276 bhp at 6250 rpm and maximum torque of 370 Nm at 3500 rpm. Only if there is perfectly matched power transmission can the virtues of a first-class engine be converted into ride comfort and driving enjoyment.
Several well thought out running gear systems in the Phaeton ensure that engine power is brought onto the road in an optimum way. The running gear is lowered at high speeds, and raised when driving over uneven surfaces. The dynamic shift programme recognizes the driver's preferred driving style and adapts the gearshift pattern accordingly using a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox. The intelligent 4MOTION all-wheel drive also comes standard in every Phaeton. A Torsen differential with sensitive reaction ensures that the distribution of power to each wheel is adapted to road conditions in a fraction of a second, thus ensuring advanced safety.
Build & Styling
Volkswagen is finding its way to the top with the Phaeton. For the very first time the car maker is offering handcrafted luxury which will reach the porches of the worthy few. The car's presence is going turn parking lots into galleries. The high-grade materials, perfect workmanship and the elegant shape that are evident at the first glance itself shape the graceful face of the Phaeton. The clear lines from the arrow-shaped bonnet and enigmatic C pillar to the arresting rear end further put the accent on the Phaeton's beauty.
The perfectly shaped door handles, discreet chrome trim, minimum gap and joint dimensions and the door mirrors all together witness the blissful harmony of design. The vibrant, commanding overall impression is highlighted by its gleaming chrome radiator grille, streamlined bumpers with chrome trim and the expressive Bi-Xenon headlights with adaptive cornering lights and LED daytime driving lights available as an option. The darkened tail lights with LED technology give the distinctive rear end an unmistakable appearance by day and night. The Phaeton also sports a headlight cleaning system and aerodynamic windscreen wipers.
The interiors are so well designed that you don't get into it. Comfort is a given when it comes to the select fabrics, the finest leather and handpicked wood that go into a Phaeton. It's the other way around. A Memory package stores info on the individual seat adjustment, the position of the belts and mirrors, and automatically moves the steering column forward when the Phaeton is opened. The front seats are 18-way adjustable. The folding centre armrest has a storage compartment and integral cup holders.
The electric sliding/tilting glass roof guarantees plenty of fresh air and light. The multi-zone Climatronic comes with a rear control unit. The vanity mirrors are fitted flush with the headlining. The Phaeton also allows for refreshments that can be chilled in the illuminated 9-litre compressor fridge. The electric sunblind on the rear window is available with manual blinds on the rear side windows. The special structure of the blinds transforms the glare of the sun into soft light and still gives a good view.
The easy-to-use controls of the Phaeton add to driving pleasure and contribute to the elegance and exemplary design of the Phaeton's cockpit. Many of the functions can be controlled with ease by means of switches on the 4-spoke multifunction steering wheel without taking hands off the handcrafted leather-covered rim. The instrument console behind the steering contains circular dials in a classic design. The multi-colour display offers info on average speed, tyre pressures, fuel consumption and more.
The standard air suspension with electronic control adapts the Phaeton exactly in line with every situation, thereby assuring the best possible road handling. A comfort setting with soft damping assures comfortable travel; when cornering fast, damping is automatically set to be firmer in order to increase stability. The suspension is also self-leveling. It recognizes and compensates for weight differences on the vehicle.
8 airbags, ABS, early crash sensors, active head restraints, rain sensor that adjusts the windscreen speed and the park distance control add to passenger safety while travelling in the Phaeton. The convenient 8-inch touch-screen allows one to enjoy music tracks and films on the drive. There is a RNS810 music system with navigation, USB and 10 loudspeakers to offer ultimate entertainment.

VOLKSWAGEN POLO
The Polo is the most important model in the VW stable for India. We drive it in Sardinia.
When the Polo goes on sale in 2010, it will be the last among the spate of premium hatchback launches. It will face stiff competition no doubt, but when you come late to the party you certainly get noticed. The new Polo won’t have a problem standing out from the pack. It may not have the flair of the Grande Punto or the futuristic shape of the Jazz but it looks every bit a VW with its strong haunches and solid look. The typically VW grille and stunning headlights only add to the appeal. Whichever way you look at it, the Polo looks great.
The engine options aren’t as exciting to begin with. At launch, there will be just a base model with a 1.2-litre petrol similar to the Fabia’s but developing 75bhp. Within a few months, more thrilling engine options will come which will include a state-of-the-art 1.2 TDI diesel developing 75bhp and a potent 1.2 TSI petrol developing a stonking 104bhp.
Unfortunately, neither the 1.2 TDI nor the base 1.2 petrol options were available in the Polos I drove during the international media drive in Sardinia (the European Polos get bigger and more powerful diesels), so it was hard to judge the Polo in the right perspective. But giving me a taste of things to come was the compact and brilliant 1.2 TSI motor. Smooth, torquey and with the promise of great fuel efficiency, this motor is just what we need in India. This direct-injection, turbo-petrol gives the Polo effortless performance. Floor the throttle pedal in any gear and there’s a delicious surge forward, which is unrelenting till you hit the rev limiter. The European models come with a DSG gearbox option that would be too expensive for the India car, which will come with only a manual.
The steering is pretty quick, the Polo diving into corners with an eagerness that will delight enthusiasts. The suspension works with a quiet efficiency and the ride is nothing short of incredible. But I must add that the smooth roads around this Mediterranean island can be quite misleading. However, I am sure Indian roads are unlikely to pose a problem for the Polo which, like most Volkswagens, will delight owners with its impeccable road manners.
The interiors are again typically VW. Plain-looking and functional and built with hard-wearing materials. I felt that some of the plastics could be richer but will reserve my judgement until we get the India-spec cars with the must-have beige interiors. The front seats are supremely comfy with a wide range of adjustments but it’s not that spacious at the back. The sloping roof line eats into headroom and there’s a cramped feeling in the rear which doesn’t bode well for a premium hatch where all-round passenger room is pretty important. Boot space is brilliant and the seats split too.
Heavy localisation is going to ensure that the Polo is aggressively priced. We expect the base model to retail for under Rs 5 lakh with the top-end model touching Rs 7 lakh. At last, quality can also be affordable.

VOLKSWAGEN SCIROCCO
IT doesn’t take long to spot a brilliant car! Auto Express drove the all-new VW Scirocco last week (Issue 1,017), and we were so impressed we gave it a full five-star rating.
That model was the 197bhp 2.0-litre TSI turbo, but now we have tried the entry-level 1.4 TSI variant. This version is set to go on sale in January for around £18,500 – that’s £2,500 less than the 2.0-litre.
So with this price difference in mind, does engine size matter? The performance figures suggest not. Fitted with both a supercharger and turbo, the 1.4-litre powerplant is a technical wonder. It also produces a healthy 158bhp.
That’s enough to propel the Scirocco from 0-62mph in eight seconds flat – only eight-tenths-of-a-second slower than the 2.0-litre TSI. Economy is better, too, at 43.5mpg compared to 37.2mpg.
Obviously, the numbers don’t tell the whole story. You have to drive the 1.4 to see just how impressive it is.
The unit is smooth and pulls keenly throughout the range. And it loves to be worked hard, too, which encourages you to make the most of the slick six-speed manual box (a seven-ratio DSG paddleshift set-up will be offered as an option for around £1,250).
The 1.4 TSI will come as standard with VW’s Adaptive Chassis Control (ACC) system. This uses computer-controlled suspension to constantly adjust the damper settings depending on road conditions and your driving style.
And by pressing a button, the driver can choose between three different modes: comfort, normal or sport, depending on whether you want to maximise refinement or handling ability. It even quickens the steering reactions. As a result, the Scirocco offers sharp and responsive cornering.
And because the 1.4-litre has this technology, and is virtually indistinguishable from the 2.0-litre inside and out, you would think it was the better bet given the price difference. If you bought one you’d be happy – so long as you never drove the 197bhp model.
Only when you try them back-to-back does it become clear that the Scirocco needs the larger engine to fully exploit the ACC system. Sadly, the 1.4 TSI doesn’t quite do this.
It’s still fun, but the motor doesn’t make the Scirocco feel like a proper performance car the way the 2.0-litre does.
VW is considering offering the smaller unit without the Adaptive Chassis Control later in 2009 – and we think this model will make more sense.
Most people who choose the lower-power car will be buying the Scirocco more for its looks rather than outright driver appeal, so the clever adjustable dampers will be pretty much redundant. We have tried a 1.4 TSI with the standard suspension, and while the handling and steering wasn’t as sharp as with ACC, it was still really good.

Volkswagen had introduced the Passat a few months ago and received a very good response. Stimulated by this success, it is now rolling out the model Touareg, a luxury SUV with an upscale interior, a long list of top-of-the-line features and outstanding off-road capabilities in its class. The Touareg is available in one variant: V6 TDI which gets a 3.0-L V6 engine.
The roomy and spacious interior, distinctive exterior styling and solid body, and environmental-friendly engine are enough to empower the Touareg to rock the Indian SUV segment. It is pitted against the Mercedes-M Class and the BMW X5 and the yet to be launched Porsche Cayenne.
It comes with the world's first ABSplus system that plays a crucial role in spotting and detecting loose and sagging surfaces such as sand or gravel and shortens the braking distance by up to 20% through controlled locking of brakes. It also comes with a spare wheel mounted as an option on the tail gate.
Powertrain & Performance
The Touareg is offered in two-wheel drive configuration. Four-wheel drive can be added as option. It is available in one variant V6 TDI which is powered by a 3.0-litre V6 Turbo Diesel Direct Injection (TDI) V6 diesel engine that cranks out an impressive 225 bhp of power at 4000 rpm and 500 Nm of torque at 1750 rpm. VOLKSWAGEN TOURAN
Driving
The Touran's driving experience strikes a good balance between comfort and cornering ability. It rolls a little and doesn't change direction quite as keenly as some sportier alternatives, but always feels stable and composed, while the steering is fluid and well weighted. VW includes stability control as standard. Crucially, a cosseting ride means the cabin is well isolated and the whole driving experience is relaxing. Engines will be familiar to VW owners - diesels sell best but, as the 1.9-litre TDI is getting on, we'd recommend the freer-revving 2.0-litre TDI. The 1.6-litre petrol is refined but needs to be worked hard, while the 1.4-litre TSI is an intriguing choice with lots of low-down shove and fair economy if driven steadily.
Marketplace
The Touran has been a big success for VW - but most would agree it falls short in the looks department. The boxy shape and flat tailgate give it a van-like appearance; a facelift in early 2007 may have seen the company's latest corporate face grafted on, yet it's still visually unexciting. The Touran has some big-name seven-seat rivals, including Vauxhall's highly successful Zafira, the Renault Grand Scenic. Citroen C4 Grand Picasso and Toyota Corolla Verso. Sister company SEAT offers the cheaper Altea XL (using a similar platform and engine range), but this can seat only five.
Owning
The Touran may be unexciting from the outside, but the interior has stood the test of time. It's clear to see the quality and simplicity of the design. The large dials and high-mounted controls for the air con and audio systems are all well placed, plus the materials used throughout are good quality. There's also lots of cabin stowage, with large door pockets, a decent-sized glovebox and three small roof-mounted cubbyholes. In the middle row, the individual chairs offer fine shoulder room when seating three, and overall comfort is excellent. The additional pair of seats pull out of the boot floor easily, and although leg and headroom is tight, adults can squeeze into the back row. With the sixth and seventh chairs folded into the floor, luggage capacity is a commendable 695 litres - and even if the chairs are used only occasionally, they're worth having, as they don't cost a penny. The only drawback is that with seven people on board, boot space tumbles to just 121 litres.

VOLKSWAGEN GOLF
The 2011 Volkswagen GTI ranks 1 out of 10 Upscale Small Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 20 published reviews and test drives of the Volkswagen GTI, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
With few changes for 2011, the Volkswagen GTI, a performance variant of the VW Golf, maintains its reputation as a car with zippy performance and a ridiculously nice interior. It's such a great value that we named it the 2011 Best Upscale Compact Car for the Money.
In 2010, Volkswagen overhauled the GTI, adding fresh changes that included chrome exhaust pipes, angular headlights and an upscale interior that rivals Audi. Edmunds says that “The VW GTI's interior is quite simply, the best in its class. It's so nice, in fact, that it could be mistaken for a cabin from sister company Audi, save for the plaid fabric seats.” Its interior and exterior receive minor updates for 2011. All trims have Bluetooth technology, a nicer steering wheel and 18” alloy wheels. VW also added classier features to the premium packages.
Volkswagen hasn’t touched the mechanics -- and that’s a good thing because the VW GTI is one of the best driving sporty hatchbacks on the market. The GTI, however, isn’t best in class. But unless consumers plan on drag racing, the GTI is perfect for driving-enthusiasts.
Overall, the VW GTI is ideal for shoppers with a little more to spend who want to invest small car that conserves gas, can hold your stuff when necessary and doesn’t sacrifice sporty performance. The VW GTI costs a bit more than last year’s model. It starts at about $23,500 for the two-door and $24,300 for the four-door. Reviewers say this is a great price for what you get, but the GTI’s price tag quickly approaches $30,000 with optional features.
Other Cars to Consider
If you love to drive, test the BMW 1-Series. It costs almost $6,000 more than the VW GTI and gets about 3 miles per gallon less in the city and on the highway, but consumers who prioritize a powerful engine, smooth transmission, precise cornering and confident braking won’t feel like they’re wasting money. As for the interior, it’s nice, but the GTI has a nicer one.
The Audi A3 is a mixture of the BMW 1-Series's performance and Volkswagen GTI’s interior. The A3 starts at $27,200 -- $1,950 less than the BMW 1-Series and $3,510 more than the VWGTI. One area where the A3 outshines its competition is its athletic-looking and attention-grabbing exterior. If you want the best of both worlds -- performance, appearance and interior quality -- and can pay more, the Audi A3 is the ideal option.

VOLKSWAGEN UP
As a global product, the 2012 Volkswagen up! is naturally engineered for safety and emissions rules for wherever it sells. Those markets apparently include North America, which thus--ahem--ups the chances for U.S. sale.
Engines are still to be decided, but CAR is predicting three 1.2-liter 4-cylinder units: normal and turbocharged gasoline units to go along with a turbocharged diesel. Though power outputs range from just 60 to 86 horsepower, performance should be respectable, as the 2012 Volkswagen Up reportedly weighs well under 2,000 lb. Transmissions will likely comprise a 6-speed manual and an optional automated manual, probably the new lower-cost 7-speed version of VW's DSG Direct Shift Gearbox. Fuel economy should be eye-popping. CAR reports that VW is aiming for around 66 mpg overall with the base gasoline engine and an amazing 95 mpg with the turbodiesel.
The 2012 Volkswagen up! will be trimmed and equipped to suit various markets. That means fairly bare-bones cars for developing nations and a higher-level package for America and other rich countries. Though the Up makes do with a fairly simple beam-type rear axle and rear drum brakes, reports suggest that front-disc brakes, ABS, and electric power steering would be standard for the U.S. So, too, front and curtain side airbags. Options are said to include high-end features such as VW's ESP antiskid/traction-control system. Standard tires are said to be modest 165/65R14s, probably on steel wheels, but we wouldn't be surprised to see beefier rubber on available 15- and 16-inch alloy rims.
Volkswagen Group is already Europe's largest automaker, and it recently passed Ford Motor Company as third largest in the world by sales, after Toyota and General Motors. The German giant is obviously doing many things right, even if it's not doing that great in North America. Then again, with cars like the 2012 Volkswagen up!, the brand might well go back to being the market powerhouse it was in the days when the original Beetle was America's top-selling import car by far. After all, the Up is designed to be just as simple and charming in 21st century terms--even if the engine isn't in the rear.
A Notable Feature of the 2012 Volkswagen up!
The 2012 Volkswagen up! is all about low-cost engineering that doesn't look or feel cheap. That and the new model's entry-level price position pretty much rules out costly design innovations. Still, this is a German brand, so look for at least a few sophisticated features, like the available antiskid system and automated manual transmission. What others might there be? That's hard to say now, but VW will doubtless try to recoup its investment by offering U.S. models with profitable "fun" options such as a rollback fabric sunroof, high-power audio with iPod plug-in, upholstery that mimics some sports apparel fabrics, and perhaps a portable navigation system. Whatever the final equipment mix, we hope that wagons show up with the Space Up! Blue concept's above-door windows that so cheerfully recall the Beetle-based Microbus of decades past.

VOLKSWAGEN CC
The 2012 Volkswagen CC ranks 11 out of 21 Upscale Midsize Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 21 published reviews and test drives of the Volkswagen CC, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.
The 2012 Volkswagen CC sacrifices function for style with its four-door coupe design and seating for four, but reviewers agree its looks inside and out help it stand out from the pack.
Though you may see more Jettas and Passats on the road, the 2012 Volkswagen CC is a car you should consider if you value style over practicality.
The Volkswagen CC is a good choice for drivers who want four doors, but rarely seat three in the back. Because it only seats four, it may not be the best family sedan. But reviewers say the compromise is worth it, and frequently compare its looks to the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class.
The 2012 Volkswagen CC’s base turbo four-cylinder engine is well-liked by test drivers, who often say that the powerful V6 option isn’t worth the extra money. All-wheel drive is available, but you’ll pay more than $10,000 for it, since it comes standard only on the top-of-the-line six-cylinder model. If you want all-wheel drive and a four-cylinder engine on the CC, you’re out of luck.
Overall, reviewers think the 2012 CC’s lower trim levels are a good value for the money, with their class-competitive turbo four-cylinder engine, good fuel economy, smooth transmission and upscale interior. But most think the pricey V6 trim isn’t worth the extra dough. Other cars in this class offer more powerful V6 engines for less money.
Other Cars to Consider
If a V6 engine and all-wheel drive are must-haves, you should test drive the 2012 Acura TL. The TL SH-AWD trim comes standard with V6 power and all-wheel drive, and is about $1,000 cheaper than the CC’s VR6 Executive trim level with standard AWD, and is just as powerful. Both produce 280 horsepower.
If you need to seat three people in the back, you should take a look at the Buick Regal. It has a comparable optional turbo four-cylinder engine and sufficient back seat room with seating for three. The Regal CXL Turbo is only $205 more than the base 2012 VW CC.
Volkswagen CC: The Details
The 2012 VW CC starts at $28,515 and is available in four trim levels: Sport, R-Line, Lux and VR6 4MOTION Executive. The V6, which comes with the all-wheel drive Executive trim, is overly expensive according to test drivers. The VR6 is almost $12,000 more than the base trim, a price the automotive press can’t justify, even though it comes standard with features like dual-zone climate control, premium sound system, panoramic moonroof, 12-way power adjustable front seats, driver’s seat massage, leather seats, rearview camera, navigation and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
The 2012 Volkswagen CC remains mostly unchanged from 2011, except for fewer trim levels, a new analog clock on all trim levels and real wood trim, which is part of the $2,445 plus package available on the Lux trim and standard on the VR6 Executive trim. Standard features include heated and power adjustable front seats, Bluetooth, satellite radio and iPod connectivity.
